2009 was a big year for Bombay Bicycle Club. The long awaited LP from them came after a seemingly never ending wave of hype since their arrival on Road to V’s programme when the band were doing their GCSE’s, but the wait for album number deux came in just under twelve months. The acoustic album ‘Flaws’ is made up of a reworking of past single , b-sides, two covers and new material.
The reworked version of ‘Dust on the Ground’ is the first real stand out track. Stripped down, its where you realise how bare Jack Steadman’s vocals are placed on the track. Whilst the energy from the earlier EP’s carried across a youthful playful sound, most of Jack’s lyrics on this album have came from regret, especially so on ‘Leaving Blues’.
Recent single ‘Flaws’ builds slowly with dual boy/girl vocals, but its on the Joanna Newsom cover that closes the album ‘Swansea’ when the humming in the refrain is played over a swirling and rising synth pattern.
The speed and quality in which BBC’s new material is coming out is promising, and the maturity of the their writing shows they’ll be around longer than their late teens.

Calling Isles & Glaciers a supergroup would be a somewhat true statement, although supergroups haven’t had the greatest of luck in receiving great success *cough* Velvet Revolver *cough*. Supergroup nonetheless, their debut EP (featuring Jonny Craig of Emarosa), is a corker. Each song has its own individuality, and combines the soft to hard song written elements with electronic samples and heavy drums, along with mathy, angular guitars.
The production is pristine and clear, with every strum and word easy to make out, but it is the vocals that really make this record stand out. Craig Owens (Chiodos) yelps and whines his way through the melodies (although not in bad taste), while Jonny Craig adds a more soulful experience to the lyrics. There are Pop-Punk melodies aplenty throughout the record, which can sometimes become dry, however due to both singers abilities and range, it soon becomes clear that this is in no way a pre-teen Pop-Punk shamble.
Track 3 “Clush” was a particular favourite, starting with distorted drum samples and containing an unpredictable chorus, it flows seemingly between sections and never disappoints. Overall, an extremely promising debut that should definitely be owned and on your iTunes. Give it a few listens and i’m sure you’ll grow to love it.
